Alabama Man Indicted for Bank Robbery, Attempted Robbery
According to the indictment filed in U.S. District Court, Vaughn, 60, entered the Citizen´s Trust Bank at 1700 1st Ave. North on July 28 and demanded money. He failed in that robbery attempt and walked away. About 20 minutes later, Vaughn entered the Bancorp South Bank, at 1819 5th Ave. North, and approached a bank teller. He held up his hand simulating he had a pistol, and demanded money. Vaughn took $19 and left the bank. Birmingham police arrested him downtown shortly thereafter.
The case was investigated by the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in conjunction with Birmingham Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Montminy is prosecuting it on behalf of the United States.
Members of the public are reminded that an indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government´s burden to prove a defendant´s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
