Afghanistan--- IT'S TIME TO LEAVE

Nickolas Bay
What in the world are we doing in a country that has been occupied and influenced by outside interests before Alexander the Great arrived in 330BC followed by many occupiers ending in recent years with the 1979 Soviet invasion followed by the US invasion that overthrew the Taliban government in October of 2001.

Afghanistan has been influenced by a plethora of outside religious and political beliefs, too many to list in this article. History has taught us nothing. We keep repeating what others have tried before us. The ideology, social and religious beliefs of Afghanistan are unique to that country. For us to declare we are occupying Afghanistan in self defense really takes a stretch of the imagination.

As of 2010 we lost hundreds of our troops, over a trillion dollars and nine years of trying to free a country in which the tribal majority didn´t want us there in the first place. We are training Afghanistan soldiers who in turn steal our money and many refuse to shoot at the enemy when ordered to do so. We are supplying guns to men who may very well use them against us.

Some claim this is where our 9/11 disaster was designed or promoted. I think we are playing into the hands of Al-Qaida. They have no home country but they have flexibility to move from one country to another. There will always be poor people in many countries of the world who will welcome terrorists as they move in supplying basic needs as food and clothing. What will we do next, follow Al-Qaida to the next country and occupy it as well, claiming we are protecting our country by occupying theirs? There is no end to this scenario; we bleed our country while saving others. This is insane.

Our domestic problems at home are serious and need all the attention and funding we can manage. Where will this money come from? We should look at the pentagon expenditures first. According to news sources they spend one third of their budget, over one trillion dollars,on our present wars, mostly in Iraq and Afghanistan.

To continue with our present policy to stimulate our economy by creating jobs, let´s begin by cutting our war expenditures. Fight terrorists by using the CIA to fight the way they do, infiltration.

We all have opinions about what should be done, but only a few in the government have all the facts. The fact seems to remain that we are helping Al-Qaida by our occupying a country when we think Osama bin Laden is hiding there. My vote,as a veteran who loves this country,is to get out of Afghanistan and Iraq ---the sooner the better. This is called a strategic withdrawal.
