Kentucky GOP governor to appear before grand jury

FRANKFORT, Ky., Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher has been subpoenaed to appear before the special grand jury investigating the hiring practices of his administration.

Investigators served the subpoena Friday to the governor's general counsel, Jim Deckard. It calls for Fletcher to appear before the grand jury Aug. 30., reported the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader Saturday.

The governor's communications director Carla Blanton did not comment on the subpoena.

"As we've said from the beginning, it would be inappropriate for us to comment on grand jury proceedings," she said.

Fletcher's administration is being investigated for allegedly improperly hiring, firing or transferring rank-and-file state employees for political reasons.

Dozens of government officials have already appeared before the grand jury.
