Dear Mr. President: Want to Help the Economy?

David M. Bresnahan
Did you hear what the president said the other day? He said the people need another economic stimulus to kick start the eonomny.

I agree. It is hard to spend money you do not have. As long as the president is talking about ways to give us all more money to spend we should all give him some suggestions on ways to do that.

There is no better way to inject cash into the pockets of every working American than for the government to stop taking our money in the first place. Right. Stop taxing us.

Mr. President, if you want to do something that will stimulate our economy and give the average person more money to spend, declare a moratorium on the income tax. Stop taking taxes from the pay check of working Americans, regardless of income level.

That would immediately create an environment of enthusiasm, joy, and happiness that would send us all into every retail store in the country with a fist full of dollars ready to inject into our lifeless economy.

Better yet, refund all the taxes we paid this year without the need for a tax return. Just simply send it all back. Maintain the moratorium on income taxes for all of 2009. By the end of next year we will be so happy there is no way we would ever let you reinstate the income tax.

So, that means by next year at this time you could save the country billions by eliminating the IRS all together. Be nice to all those out of work IRS agents, and help them find new jobs in a society that is tax free.

And to give the economy an even bigger shot in the arm, release everyone you placed in jail for a tax crime. It costs more to keep them in jail than we will ever collect in taxes they supposedly owe. Set all those people free so they can earn money again and spend it to help our economy, and close all those federal prisons or use the space for real criminals.

We do not need the government to socialize health care, put us on the dole, create another WPA, or redistribute the wealth. All we need is to be left alone so we can earn a living and then use that money as we see fit.

Get the government out of our pockets and you will see economic growth beyond your wildest dreams. Housing values will come back, people will buy cars, boats, and will even start investing their money again.

Just leave our money in our pockets and leave us alone and watch what we can do without government in our lives.
